The brief
Sudan has one of the highest child mortality rates globally, with one in ten children dying before the age of five. This crisis stems from systemic weaknesses in healthcare infrastructure, insufficient funding, and the devastating impact of war. Before the April 2023 conflict, Sudan’s healthcare system was already on the brink of collapse. The war has further decimated medical facilities, with over 80% of Khartoum’s hospitals severely damaged or non-functional. The few remaining operational hospitals, such as Bashair Teaching Hospital, struggle with severe shortages of staff, surgical capacity, and critical care resources. Direct attacks on medical facilities, like the assault on Al Naw Hospital in Omdurman, have further crippled healthcare delivery.
